What causes tooth stains?
The enamel that makes up the outer layer of our teeth has small channels called tubules. When we eat and drink some of our favorite foods and beverages – such as coffee, tea, wine, berries, or red sauce – the deep pigments can make their way into these tubules, where they stain your teeth (called “intrinsic stains”). In addition, the pigments can build up in the protein film that resides on your tooth enamel, making them look darker or yellowed (called “extrinsic stains”).
The foods we eat are not the only factors that can contribute to the development of tooth stains. Patients can also find their teeth looking dull or yellow due to the following:
- Age: as we get older, the dentin in the middle of our teeth naturally becomes more yellow and the enamel becomes thinner; the combination of these two factors can lead to a yellowed appearance to the teeth
- Smoking or chewing tobacco: tobacco can lead to brown discoloration on just a few or all your teeth
- Inadequate dental hygiene: regular brushing and flossing help eliminate surface stains and help prevent pigments from working their way into your teeth
- Medications: certain medications, such as some antibiotics, high blood pressure medications, antihistamines, and chemotherapies can all lead to the development of intrinsic tooth stains
- Fluoride exposure: excess fluoride exposure during your childhood, typically through the water supply, can lead to staining (called “fluorosis”)
KöR professional tooth whitening system
At Triad Dentistry, we are proud to offer the KöR whitening system to our patients so they can achieve brighter smiles up to eight shades whiter – all in just about an hour. We perform the KöR whitening treatment in our office for fast results, and provide you with take-home trays that you can use between your in-office treatments to maintain your great results.
The KöR whitening system is known throughout the world as the most effective tooth whitening system available. The reason it is so effective and highly regarded is due to its proprietary Dual-Activated, Tri-Barrel™ Hydremide® peroxide formulation and unique delivery system, which delivers dramatic results in a short amount of time. It is even effective on stains that other whitening treatments typically cannot address, such as those caused by tetracycline.
The in-office treatment
The first step in your tooth whitening process is consulting with one of our dentists to determine that KöR tooth whitening is right for you. When you come in for your treatment, we will first apply a protective gel on your gums and other soft tissues to ensure that the whitening solution does not cause irritation on these sensitive areas. We also gently hold them away from your teeth using a plastic appliance so we can cover all surfaces of your teeth evenly. Then, we apply the whitening gel to your tooth enamel. At the end of your treatment time, we rinse your mouth with fresh water, and you are free to enjoy your bright new smile!
How KöR take-home whitening is different?
At its essence, all peroxide tooth whitening treatments work by breaking down the particles into oxygen, water, and “bleaching factors” that help clear away stains on the surface and inside the tubules of your teeth. But many over-the-counter and professional tooth whitening solutions are only fully potent for about 25 to 35 minutes at a time, because the saliva in the patient’s mouth begins to dilute the solution and prevent it from effectively breaking down the stains in teeth. However, the KöR system is specifically designed to combat this problem through its uniquely designed KöR-Seal™ trays that seal out saliva and sulcular fluid, leading to up to 6 to 10 hours of potent whitening activity (compared to about 30 minutes in other treatments).
In addition to being highly effective, the KöR whitening process is safe, painless, and comfortable, making it a clear choice for patients who want to achieve great results in a short amount of time.
Teeth Whitening at Triad Dentistry
What is teeth whitening?
Hi, I am Dr. Steven Hatcher here at Triad Dentistry in Greensboro, North Carolina. I get a lot of questions about teeth whitening, like what is it? How does it work? Will it work for me?
It is a non-invasive way to give yourself a nicer, whiter, brighter smile.
What are the teeth whitening methods available at Triad Dentistry?
You can do it in the office, which is more of a power bleach. You sit in the chair, and we use some high-concentration in-office bleach for your teeth, and you get the results immediately in about an hour.
The other way is we can fabricate custom whitening trays for you, and you can use those at home. Typically, we have people wear them in the shower for about 15-20 minutes.
In a week or so, you can get two to three shades lighter than where you currently are.
What causes teeth discoloration, and how effective is teeth whitening?
Some of the common causes for teeth to get darker are drinking coffee or tea or things that can stain the teeth every day.
You do get the best results with teeth whitening after you had good teeth cleaning. What it will not change the shade of is if you already have any crowns, veneers, fillings, bonding, etc.
If you are thinking about teeth whitening, make sure you get those procedures done before to the shade you want to be in.
