Patients in Greensboro, NC area are interested in getting dental treatments are often worried about the anxiety they may experience before and during their appointment. It is common for patients to have dental anxieties, regardless of the treatment they are seeking. If you think that a visit to the dentist cannot possibly involve relaxation, think again! Drs. Steven Hatcher and Chad Merrell are excited to offer options for calming dental anxieties such as IV sedation.

What is IV sedation?

Patients who want to rest comfortably during their next dental treatment are encouraged to ask our team about the possibility of having IV sedation. IV sedation is a method of administering sedation intravenously. This immediately gives patients a sense of relaxation through a proper dosage of sedatives. It is perfect for those who have a variety of concerns that may make it difficult for them to get through a dental treatment, including:

  • Patients with neuromuscular disorders that can make it difficult for them to keep their mouths open for long periods of time without pain
  • Patients who have dental anxieties or phobias that often keep them from getting necessary work done
  • Patients with a fear of needles, the drill, or any other aspect that may trigger thoughts associated with pain
  • Patients who have conditions that can make it difficult for them to sit still for extended or precision dental treatments
  • Patients who are having extended treatments done that may require hours in the dental chair to complete
  • Patients with sensitive gag reflexes

How to determine if IV sedation is right for you?

Before patients can undergo IV sedation, it is necessary they consult with our dentists first to determine if it is the right option for their specific needs. Drs. Steven Hatcher and Chad Merrell speak with patients about their medical history and any conditions they may have that may affect their ability to safely undergo sedation. Once patients have explained their medical history and described their concerns, our team can help them decide if IV sedation is appropriate for their specific needs. In some cases, patients may be excellent candidates to undergo sedation with this method, while others may be able to achieve relaxation with alternative methods, such as nitrous oxide or oral conscious sedation. Choosing the sedation best for you is done with the assistance of our dental team.

What to expect during IV sedation?

Before undergoing a procedure with IV sedation, patients will be given clear instructions to follow prior to visiting the office for treatment. This may include avoiding anything to eat or drink for approximately eight hours before the appointment, unless they are given prescription medications that have been cleared by our dental team to take as needed. When patients arrive at the dental office, our staff will evaluate their current health by checking breathing rate, heart rate, and blood pressure. The patient is prepared for the IV with a needle inserted into the primary vein in the arm, and then the specific dosage of sedative is determined based on many factors, including the weight of the patient and the intensity of their anxiety. Our staff will adjust sedation throughout the procedure, as needed, to ensure they are relaxed. Most patients feel so relaxed, they fall asleep for the entire procedure and awaken later after the sedation is ceased.
