What can I expect before, during, and after dental implant surgery?

- Before dental implant surgery. Before you have dental implant surgery performed, our team will evaluate you to make sure you are a proper candidate. This may include taking dental x-rays to assess the health of the bone and the overall smile to determine candidacy. Once you are deemed an appropriate candidate for treatment, our team will schedule the dental implant surgery date for you. If you need to stop certain medications or activities before your procedure, they will advise you at this time to help prepare you for the day of the procedure.
- During dental implant surgery. Patients often worry about whether or not they will feel pain and discomfort during treatment. The team at Triad Dentistry can talk to you about options for sedation and anesthetics to help you choose the most appropriate for you to ensure a positive experience. Patients using oral or IV sedation during their procedure must make arrangements to be driven to and from the office. Patients find that they are comfortable and pain-free during the procedure with the right combination of sedation and anesthetics.
- After dental implant surgery. To ensure the dental implant takes hold in the jawbone, all that is needed is time! We want to give time to allow the process of osseointegration, or bone growth, to occur, which solidifies the implant in place and allows it to become part of the body and mouth. After the implant is integrated properly, restorations are considered. Patients can use a dental crown to replace one tooth, a dental bridge to replace several teeth in a row, or a complete cosmetic denture to replace the entire arch of teeth. Implant-retained dentures are a highly effective way of restoring the smile after tooth loss and are readily available at Triad Dentistry. We urge patients to carefully follow all post-procedure instructions to minimize the chance of complications such as infection or failure.
