This procedure uses a tooth colored composite resin, which is very similar to the material used in cosmetic fillings. The material has a putty-like consistency, and its color can be adjusted to match the precise shade of your natural tooth enamel. It can be used to correct the appearance of chips, cracks, stains, widely spaced teeth, and many other common cosmetic concerns.
The procedure takes just one appointment and little, if any, tooth preparation. The area to be treated is thoroughly cleaned, and diseased or damaged tooth material is removed if necessary. Next, your dentist will apply a generous layer of composite to the treatment site. The resin is sculpted and smoothed, and any excess removed. When the ideal shape and contours have been achieved, it is hardened with a curing light. The shape is further refined with a file if needed. Lastly, it is smoothed and polished. The result looks entirely natural, as if the flaw was magically erased from your tooth.

Instead, it is a type of gum surgery that removes excess tissue to expose additional tooth surface. During the procedure, the area is numbed to ensure that you remain comfortable. You dentist will carefully trim away excess gum tissue, and possibly reduce the bone if needed. The gumline is sculpted for an even smooth, symmetrical appearance. The area is then cleansed, and any incisions are closed with sutures.
There is little to no downtime. Gum tissue heals relatively quickly, at which time you will be able to resume normal daily activities. However, complete healing of all soft tissue and bone involved may take up to three months.

Larger restorations, such as dental crowns or the replacement teeth that top implants, are made from premier quality porcelain. Although resin is durable and natural looking in small areas, it is not quite as strong as enamel, nor does it have the same translucency and luminescence. Therefore, it would not be ideal for larger applications. Porcelain, on the other hand, is remarkably similar to enamel in both strength and appearance. A well-made porcelain cap or false tooth is indistinguishable in appearance from a real tooth.
