Overcoming Dental Fear: Why Sedation Dentistry is a Game-changer

  • Dr.Steven L. Hatcher
  • Dental Cleaning
Dr. Steven Hatcher offers nitrous oxide gas as well as oral conscious sedation.

Blending cutting-edge technology with light touch techniques has made modern dental treatments more comfortable and nearly painless. Despite these innovations, many patients still avoid the dentist due to overwhelming dental fear and anxiety. Triad Dentistry understands dental fear is real, and we have made it our mission to ensure every patient feels at ease. Dr. Steven Hatcher offers sedation dentistry to clients in and around Greensboro, North Carolina, to ensure even the most anxious patients enjoy dentistry.

How does sedation dentistry work?

Sedation dentistry uses anti-anxiety medication to calm your nerves during dental procedures. The level of sedation can vary based on the procedure and the level of anxiety, ranging from minimal (where you are awake but relaxed) to deep (where you are nearly unconscious but can still be woken).

Sedation dentistry is beneficial for patients with dental fear, a sensitive gag reflex, and a low tolerance to pain. Dr. Hatcher can also recommend sedation dentistry to anyone unable to numb with anesthetics or those undergoing complex dental procedures.

Under sedation, you won’t experience pain or discomfort. You’ll also lose sensation, so your brain won’t record the dental noises, sights, and smells that invoke anxiety in many patients. Patients also remain still during the treatment, allowing the dentist to complete dental work faster. Sedation dentistry is a win-win for both patients and dentists!

Oral sedation can be used in combination with nitrous oxide and/or numbing injections.

Are there different sedation dentistry options?

Dental anxiety can stem from several factors, ranging from fear of needles and past negative experiences to fear of losing control. Our office offers several sedation dentistry options to suit numerous dental needs. Depending on your age, anxiety level, and other unique needs, our dentist may recommend the following sedation dentistry options.

  • Nitrous oxide: This is the mildest and most common sedation treatment and is administered through a small mask placed on the mouth or nose. The sedation effects kick in immediately and remain as long as you inhale the gas. Although the patient remains awake and responsive, the sedation creates a mood of relaxation and bliss. Mildness and fast recovery make inhalation sedation beneficial to patients of all ages, including children.
  • IV sedation: This sedation is administered directly to the bloodstream through a vein in the hand. IV sedation provides a deeper level of relaxation, making it ideal for patients with severe dental fear or undergoing complex treatments. Patients under IV sedation are continuously monitored and have little to no memory of their treatment.

Dental fear isn’t something to be embarrassed about—it affects millions of patients. Talking to your dentist about your anxiety is the first step to overcoming this fear. Dr. Hatcher empathizes with dental-phobic patients because of its impact on their oral health. Often, dental fear prevents patients from receiving necessary dental care, compounding dental problems.

Is sedation dentistry safe?

Sedation dentistry is FDA-approved and is generally safe when administered by professionals. Dr Hatcher is trained to provide sedation safely and effectively. Before administering any form of sedation, we thoroughly review your medical history, current medications, and overall health to ensure it’s the right option. Your vital signs are monitored throughout the procedure to maximize your safety and comfort.
