How does the professional teeth whitening work?
The professional whitening process starts with an evaluation to determine if patients are candidates for treatment. This will include an examination. Patients who have restorations such as porcelain veneers, dental crowns, inlays or onlays may not be deemed appropriate for whitening services unless they intend to replace these porcelain repairs. This is because the whitening treatment does not affect the porcelain and can cause the restorations to look discolored following whitening services. Once patients have opted to move forward with professional whitening treatments, the dental hygienists will perform a thorough cleaning of the teeth. This removes plaque and tartar, which may keep the whitening gel from doing its job. After the teeth have been cleaned, a barrier gel is applied to the gum tissues to keep the gel from burning. This is one of many steps taken to ensure safety. Once the barrier gel is applied, the special professional whitening gel is applied to the surfaces of the teeth. This gel is a high concentration of bleaching ingredients that is activated once the dentist places the light over the smile. Patients rest in the treatment chair as the light activates the bleaching gel, which then lifts stains from deep within the enamel. After approximately 45 minutes, the teeth are cleaned again, and patients can leave the office with their newly brilliant smile!

Why not over-the-counter whitening products?

For 24 hours after whitening, patients should avoid staining foods and beverages, as well as smoking, which can stain the teeth quickly. Patients should use a whitening toothpaste and continue to see their dentist regularly to maintain the results in the way they desire.
