How does the professional teeth whitening work?
The professional whitening process starts with an evaluation to determine if patients are candidates for treatment. This will include an examination. Patients who have restorations such as porcelain veneers, dental crowns, inlays or onlays may not be deemed appropriate for whitening services unless they intend to replace these porcelain repairs. This is because the whitening treatment does not affect the porcelain and can cause the restorations to look discolored following whitening services. Once patients have opted to move forward with professional whitening treatments, the dental hygienists will perform a thorough cleaning of the teeth. This removes plaque and tartar, which may keep the whitening gel from doing its job. After the teeth have been cleaned, a barrier gel is applied to the gum tissues to keep the gel from burning. This is one of many steps taken to ensure safety. Once the barrier gel is applied, the special professional whitening gel is applied to the surfaces of the teeth. This gel is a high concentration of bleaching ingredients that is activated once the dentist places the light over the smile. Patients rest in the treatment chair as the light activates the bleaching gel, which then lifts stains from deep within the enamel. After approximately 45 minutes, the teeth are cleaned again, and patients can leave the office with their newly brilliant smile!

Why not over-the-counter whitening products?
Many patients who visit Triad Dentistry are interested in services that can provide them with the results they truly desire. While there are many whitening products available in the local drugstores, such as whitening pens, strips, toothpastes, and trays, these are made at a much lower concentration of active ingredients than those available through a dentist. Because of this, they rarely provide the results patients are looking for. Additionally, patients who use these may experience extreme sensitivity of the teeth and gums if not used appropriately. Professional whitening performed in a dental office is monitored by our dental team from start to finish to ensure it is safe and the results are as desired. It is also a wise investment for patients who may have been throwing their money away on over-the-counter treatments that continually fail to work.
How do I care for my smile after whitening?
For 24 hours after whitening, patients should avoid staining foods and beverages, as well as smoking, which can stain the teeth quickly. Patients should use a whitening toothpaste and continue to see their dentist regularly to maintain the results in the way they desire.
