At Triad Dentistry, we understand that visiting the dentist’s chair may bring about fear or anxiety. However, it should never keep you from getting the necessary dental care you need. The doctors at Triad Dentistry, including Dr. Steven Hatcher, want to ensure you are comfortable and at ease during your visit, which is why we offer nitrous and IV sedation dentistry solutions for our Greensboro, North Carolina, area patients.
Understanding sedation dentistry and how it works
Sedation dentistry effectively alleviates fear and anxiety by selecting the correct sedation method for each patient. Sedation dentistry is a highly effective way of getting patients to relax during their visit. It is an excellent solution for patients with severe dental anxiety who might otherwise not make it into the office for treatment.
What options are available for patients with dental anxiety?
We offer three methods of sedation dentistry at our practice, including:
- Nitrous oxide – nitrous oxide has been used for decades to reduce anxiety and help with pain and gag reflexes in many patients. This gas is administered through the nose during the dental visit to relax patients. It is sometimes referred to as laughing gas, but it typically just relaxes a patient, sometimes to the point of taking a nap in the dental chair. This makes it easier to get the work done quickly and without anxiety. With nitrous oxide sedation, you can drive back by yourself and return to your routine work right after your procedure since the effects of nitrous oxide wear off within minutes after removing the nasal mask
- IV sedation – IV sedation is found to be the most effective sedation method. Patients with severe dental anxiety may benefit from IV sedation, during which sedative medication is administered directly into the bloodstream. It provides deeper sedation and is best for those with intense fears or conditions that make it difficult to stay still in the dental chair for long and complex procedures. This method also allows your dentist to monitor your breathing, pulse, and blood pressure throughout the course and adjust the dosage accordingly
- Oral conscious sedation – This sedative medication slows down brain activity, creating a feeling of calmness. Patients take the medication before leaving for their appointment, though they must arrange transportation to and from the office.
