It is not unusual for the doctors of Triad Dentistry to have patients who require dental extractions.
Why remove a tooth?
There are many reasons a patient may require the removal of a tooth. They include, but are not limited to:
- A tooth with an extremely large cavity
- Injury to the tooth, such as breakage or extensive damage
- Failed root canal therapy
- Removal of the wisdom teeth due to pain
- Removal of teeth to prepare for orthodontic work (specifically when overcrowding is present)
Do dental extractions hurt?
There are two types of dental extractions that are performed in our practice – a simple extraction and a surgical extraction. Surgical extractions are required when patients need to have a tooth removed from below the gum line. This may be done if a tooth is impacted and has not yet broken through. For a simple extraction, a tooth is simply wedged out of the bone using special tools. These teeth can be pulled in a matter of minutes.
Dental extractions do not hurt because our team uses local anesthetics as well as sedation to ensure optimum patient comfort throughout the procedure. Sedative methods used include inhalation, oral conscious sedation, and IV sedation. All three are available at our practice. They are not only used during dental extractions but even for simple cleanings and examinations when our patients have high anxiety.
