What You Must Know About the Significance of Children’s Dentistry

Children's Dentistry in Greensboro NC Area

Triad Dentistry is honored to be the go-to pediatric dental office for families in Greensboro, North Carolina, and the surrounding areas. Led by our board-certified pediatric dentists, Drs. Sona Isharani and Shima Ghattan, we care for children as young as 12 months and even younger if needed. While many parents wait until their children are older to schedule dental visits, early dental care is essential! Toddlers can develop cavities, and regular pediatric appointments are vital in preventing these issues from the start.

Why does pediatric dental care matter?

Children’s dental care starts as early as the child is born. Although teeth are yet to erupt, you should clean your child’s mouth by wiping their gums with a wet cloth. When your child’s teeth erupt, clean them with a soft-bristled toothbrush and water. When your child learns how to spit, use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste. Blend your at-home care with pediatric dental visits, starting around age one. Although it may seem early, children’s dental care has the following advantages.

  • Prevention: Children’s dentistry prevents cavities, gum disease, infection, and other dental issues. Rather than wait for dental problems, we are proactive with your child’s dental care to prevent them. Our preventive dental care services include dental cleanings, sealants, and fluoride treatments.
  • Early detection: Dentists detect dental issues that may go unnoticed at home. We also use advanced tools like X-rays and intraoral cameras to identify dental problems even before symptoms crop up. Early detection of dental issues helps us treat them with affordable and less invasive treatments.
  • Promotes positive experience: Children who visit the dentist regularly from a young age see dental care as a regular part of their routine rather than something to be feared. Early visits help children become familiar with a dental office’s sights, sounds, and experiences, creating positive associations. This early exposure builds trust and reduces anxiety, making children more likely to prioritize their oral health as they grow.
  • Protects the overall body: Several systemic health issues, such as diabetes, often manifest early signs in the mouth. A dentist can spot these oral symptoms through routine check-ups before they become more apparent elsewhere in the body. This early detection allows timely referrals to medical professionals, leading to better overall health management.
  • Education: Pediatric visits offer a perfect opportunity for parents, guardians, and children to learn more about dental care. Our team uses friendly and engaging techniques to teach children proper brushing and flossing techniques. We also educate parents/caregivers on the dangers that prolonged thumb sucking, mouth breathing, pacifier use, and baby bottle feeding can have on the child’s oral health.

Baby teeth will eventually fall out, but that doesn’t mean they don’t matter. Primary or deciduous teeth help the child speak and eat. Baby teeth also act as placeholders for adult teeth. Losing them too soon to decay or damage affects the healthy eruption of permanent teeth.
