Dental services for patients in Greensboro with gum disease
What is gum disease?
Also called periodontal disease, gum disease begins in the soft tissues of the mouth. It is an infection that develops often due to poor oral health habits. Dentists encourage patients to brush and floss after every meal and visit the dentist every six months. When this does not occur, patients are at risk of developing periodontal disease along with other issues such as cavities. This infection can range from mild to severe, and when left untreated, it can result in irreversible damage to the smile. It can eat away at the gum tissue and the bone.
How is gum disease treated?
Gum disease is treated with a thorough cleaning of the teeth and gum tissue. This is best performed at the earlier stages of the disease – gingivitis. However, when patients leave gingivitis untreated, they are putting their smiles at risk for further issues. The later stages, called periodontitis, often require a procedure known as scaling and root planing, and antibiotics to control the infection and help bring the smile back to health. Periodontal disease cannot be cured, only controlled with the assistance of quality dental professionals.
