So what is prevention? Why do we clean teeth?
The main reason is to prevent either periodontal disease or cavities from destroying either the teeth or bones that support teeth. Once periodontal disease sets in, the bone supporting teeth erodes away over time. There is no pain with gum disease but there are signs. If your gums bleed you may have periodontal disease. X-rays along with a comprehensive dental exam will tell you if you have gum disease. It is much easier to prevent gum disease than to treat the aftermath. The old cliche of “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of medicine” definitely holds true in preventive dentistry.
